Wensley the Wensleydoodle – Character Profile

Wensley the Wensleydoodle is the Cheese Family’s faithful four-legged companion: part dog, part wedge of cheese and almost entirely controlled by his nose.

He loves his family, enjoys a good biscuit and can be surprisingly heroic when it matters. Unfortunately, an interesting smell can make him forget almost everything else.

Appearance

Wensley the Wensleydoodle image

Wensley is a four-legged, wedge-shaped Wensleydoodle. His pale creamy-golden cheese body forms his distinctive wedge silhouette, while his dog-like features include soft furry legs and paws, floppy cream ears, a furry wagging tail and an enormous dark nose.

His large warm brown eyes have the unmistakable “melty” expression that makes it difficult to stay annoyed with him for very long.

Wensley wears a simple green collar with a little cheese-shaped tag.

Unlike the rest of the Cheese Family, he walks naturally on all fours — because however unusual his cheese-shaped body may be, Wensley is absolutely a dog.

Personality

Wensley is affectionate, curious, friendly, loyal and extremely distractible.

Most cheeses think about where they’re going.

Wensley thinks in smells.

At the carnival, the family knows that looking for him in a straight line is pointless because scents cross and loop through his world in ways only Wensley understands. His adventures leave behind pawprints, crumbs and other tiny clues showing where his nose has taken him next.

His curiosity gets him into trouble, but that same nose can be invaluable. At the Nationals, Wensley detects the strange oily smell from a sabotaged glitter cannon. When sparks begin to fly, he races across the polished floor and yanks the loose electrical cord free, preventing a disaster.

Halloumi promptly christens him the “sparkle hound.”

Family and friendships

Wensley belongs to the whole Cheese Family.

Lady Brie trusts him enough to send him racing through the village carrying an important message gently in his mouth. Mini and Babybel adore him, Eddie may occasionally sound exasperated with him, and Sir Blue Vein understands that finding a missing Wensleydoodle sometimes requires thinking like one.

Wensley also has an unexpected fondness for dancing. At the carnival, the Stilton Sisters turn him into their temporary stage hound, where he taps his paws and barks along with the beat as though he’d rehearsed the routine all week.

Stories featuring Wensley

In Chutney and Champions, Wensley’s sharp nose makes him an unlikely hero when he detects the sabotaged glitter cannon and prevents an accident during the Disco Twins’ performance.

In The Crumbly Carnival, an irresistible trail of smells leads him away from the family and into a sequence of unexpected adventures.

And in Wensley Follows His Nose, Wensley takes centre stage as one interesting smell leads to another — and he discovers that however exciting an adventure may be, finding your way home matters most.

Fun fact

Wensley’s nose can lead him almost anywhere.

Whether Wensley himself knows where he’s going is another question entirely.

Image description

A landscape illustration of Wensley the Wensleydoodle following an interesting smell along a sunny village path. Wensley is a four-legged, wedge-shaped cheese dog whose pale creamy-golden cheese body forms his distinctive triangular silhouette and contains several natural-looking holes.

His dog-like features include soft cream fur around his face and muzzle, four furry legs and paws, large floppy cream ears, an enthusiastically wagging furry tail, enormous warm brown eyes and a prominent shiny black nose. He wears a simple green collar with a small cheese-shaped tag.

Wensley has lowered his head towards the path to investigate a scattering of crumbs, with his nose almost touching the ground and one paw poised as though he’s about to follow the scent onwards. His tail is wagging excitedly behind him.

Around Wensley are colourful flowers and a rustic village path, with golden cheese-shaped cottages, green shutters, wooden doors, gardens, fencing, trees and rolling green hills in the warm sunlight.
