Sir Blue Vein is the grandfather, historian and storyteller at the heart of the Cheese Family. Long before he settled beside the library fire with a book in his lap, he was a nervous young explorer whose search for a legendary path changed the direction of his life.

Three stages of Sir Blue
The young explorer

As a young wedge, Blue is pale and triangular, with blue-green veins and a curious expression. He travels with a map, travelling satchel and oversized sturdy boots, carrying more determination than confidence. He studies routes carefully and wants every path to make sense, although the most important journey of his life refuses to stay neatly on the page.
In Trails and Twirls, his search for the mysterious Step of Ages leads him into the mountains and to a bright young guide named Brie. She understands that paths can be heard in songs and felt beneath the feet. Through her, Blue begins to discover that some journeys are remembered through movement rather than ink.

Fine blue-green veins are beginning to show across his rind. He has bright blue eyes and a warm, curious expression. Dressed as a young explorer, he wears a blue scarf, travelling clothes and comically oversized brown walking boots, with a leather satchel full of maps and books over his shoulder. Around him are old stone buildings, expedition equipment and a wooden signpost pointing towards Fromageville and the Dairylands. A winding path leads away through the rolling green countryside, suggesting the adventures still ahead of him.
The dancing years

Blue grows into a confident and stylish performer. Dressed in top hat and tails, with polished shoes and an elegant cane, he dances beside Brie beneath lanterns and theatre lights. His steps remain shaped by the explorer he once was: observant, precise and always listening to the ground beneath him.
Blue and Brie become travelling dance partners, learning that rhythm can carry history just as faithfully as a journal. The dancing years bring trophies, adventures and stories that Blue will later pass to the next generation.

His blue-green veining is more developed than in his younger years, and he has bright blue eyes and a cheerful, confident smile. He is dressed elegantly in a black top hat and tails, patterned waistcoat, blue bow tie, pinstriped trousers and polished shoes. Caught mid-dance, he tips his top hat with one hand while holding an elegant cane with the other. Musicians and other cheese characters fill the lively dance hall behind him, while old maps, journals and travelling equipment around the room hint at the explorer he used to be.
The elder storyteller

In later life, Sir Blue Vein has deeper blue-green veins, a grey moustache and eyebrows, a monocle and a warm, wise smile. He dresses smartly beneath his colourful patchwork storyteller’s robe and walks with his familiar cane.
He is now most often found in his library chair, surrounded by books and family. He tells the Cheese Family stories from his own memories, but he never pretends that he was always fearless or always right. His honesty, affection and gentle humour are as important as the adventures themselves.

He has bright blue eyes, grey eyebrows, a curled grey moustache and his familiar monocle, giving him a warm and slightly mischievous expression. He wears smart clothes beneath a colourful patchwork storyteller’s robe and has his cane beside him while he holds a delicate teacup. Books, old maps, journals, a globe and travelling keepsakes fill the cosy room around him, recalling his years as an explorer and dancer before he became the Cheese Family’s storyteller.
Personality
Sir Blue is thoughtful, cautious, curious and quietly brave. He likes maps, journals and proper preparation, yet life repeatedly teaches him to trust other people and make room for the unexpected. As an elder he is patient and encouraging, with a storyteller’s fondness for dramatic pauses and a grandfather’s talent for knowing when the family needs reassurance.
Family and friendships
Lady Brie is his wife, lifelong dance partner and closest companion. Eddie Emmental is their son. Their two eldest grandchildren are Monterey Jack Flash and Halloumi Belle, better known as the Disco Twins. Mini Mozzarella and Babybel are their younger grandchildren. Sir Blue is also the brother of Velvet Blue, whose return in The Stilton Divide brings old memories and long-needed healing.
Fun fact
Sir Blue has kept the journals from every stage of his life: explorer’s maps, dancer’s notes and the reflections from his storytelling years. Together they smell faintly of old paper, woodsmoke and adventure.
