Lady Brie – Character Profile

Lady Brie is the warm-hearted matriarch of the Cheese Family. Long before she became a grandmother and keeper of family stories, she was a thoughtful young guide and an accomplished dancer. At every stage of her life, she has helped others find their way — sometimes by following a path, sometimes by listening to the rhythm beneath their feet.

Three stages of Lady Brie

The young guide and dancer

As a young cheese, Brie has a creamy golden centre and a soft white rind. She carries a notebook and satchel, recording paths, songs, dances and useful details that others might miss.

Brie is already an experienced dancer when she meets young Blue Vein in Trails and Twirls. As she travels, she learns steps in one village and turns in another, dreaming of collecting the dances of all the places she visits. She understands that rhythm can be another way of finding a path.

When Blue begins to discover dancing for himself, Brie is the one who teaches him to stop trying to solve every step and instead listen to the music, the room and his own feet. Their friendship soon grows into something much more important.

Young Brie stands on a cobbled street in a warmly lit mountain village. She is a wedge of Brie with a creamy-golden centre, soft white rind, large brown eyes, freckles and a cheerful expression. She wears practical cream travelling clothes, sturdy brown walking boots and a flowing pale-blue scarf and ribbons.

A brown leather satchel hangs at her side, and she holds an open notebook and pencil. Other cheese characters dance in the distance among timber-framed cottages, lanterns and bunting, with mountains rising beyond the village.

Her notebook, satchel and boots reflect her life as a young guide and traveller, while the flowing ribbons and distant dancers represent the dancing that was already an important part of her life.

The dancing years

Brie and Blue eventually travel together, following roads that lead not only to new places but to festivals, competitions and stages.

Brie becomes a poised, joyful and confident ballroom dancer. In her flowing ivory gown with pale-blue details and ribbons sweeping behind her, she and Blue dance their way through years of adventures, performances and competitions.

Their partnership is built on trust, friendship and the simple joy of moving together. Wherever Brie travels, her notebooks travel too, recording the places they visit, the people they meet, the songs they hear and the dances they learn.

Brie dances joyfully across the polished floor of a grand ballroom. She remains a creamy-golden wedge of Brie with a soft white rind, warm brown eyes and freckles.

She wears an elegant flowing ivory ballroom gown decorated with pale-blue details, with long blue ribbons sweeping through the air as she turns. Golden chandeliers illuminate the ballroom while other cheese couples dance softly in the background.

An old travelling case rests unobtrusively at the side of the scene, recalling the years Brie spent travelling from place to place with Blue as they danced at festivals, competitions and performances.

The elder matriarch

Later in life, Lady Brie wears grey curls, round glasses, pearls, a cream dress and her familiar purple shawl. She is often found with a teacup and one of her treasured notebooks.

Her competitive dancing days may be behind her, but the dancer herself has never entirely disappeared. Lady Brie still knows when someone has missed a warm-up, forgotten to stretch or stopped listening properly to the rhythm.

Gentle but never timid, she remains the calm, resourceful heart of the Cheese Family. She notices what others miss, remembers details from years ago and knows exactly what a family emergency requires — sometimes calm advice, sometimes a carefully remembered clue, and sometimes her famous crisis fondue.

Elder Lady Brie sits comfortably in a dark-blue patterned wingback chair beside a glowing fireplace. She is a creamy-golden wedge of Brie with a soft white rind, grey curls, round spectacles and a warm, cheerful expression.

She wears pearls, an elegant cream dress and her familiar purple patterned shawl, and holds a delicate teacup and saucer.

Nearby is one of her treasured notebooks, containing memories of places, people, songs and dances collected throughout her life. Her old ballroom shoes rest on a travelling trunk, and a small framed picture recalls her dancing years with Blue.

Beyond the room, warm evening light falls across a distant mountain landscape. The scene reflects the guide, dancer, traveller and keeper of family memories that Lady Brie has been throughout her life.

Personality

Lady Brie is warm, observant, practical and quietly determined. She notices when someone needs encouragement and knows when a sensible plan will help. She rarely needs to make a fuss to make herself heard, and she often understands what is happening before everyone else has quite caught up.

Her kindness is matched by a lively sense of fun, especially when music starts playing. She loves her family deeply and is always ready with encouragement, sensible advice — or tea.

Family and friendships

Sir Blue Vein is her husband, oldest friend and dancing partner. Eddie Emmental is their son. Their two eldest grandchildren are Monterey Jack Flash and Halloumi Belle, better known as the Disco Twins. Mini Mozzarella and Babybel are their younger grandchildren.

Brie helps hold the generations together by sharing memories without letting the past prevent a new adventure. She and Blue first came together through trails, rhythm and dance, and their partnership has remained at the heart of the family ever since.

Stories

Lady Brie appears throughout The Cheese Family Chronicles, including Chutney and Champions and Trails and Twirls.

In Trails and Twirls, we discover how young Brie and Blue first met, how Brie introduced Blue to dancing, and how their shared adventures began.

Fun fact

Lady Brie keeps every notebook she has ever filled. Together they contain market songs, route sketches, dance steps, family recipes, memories of the people and places she has known, and many of her grandchildren’s funniest sayings.
