Appearance

Monterey Jack Flash image

Monterey is a tall, slim golden-yellow cheese wedge with round holes, dramatically swept-back golden-blond hair and oversized dark aviator sunglasses.

His signature performance look is pure seventies disco: a glittering gold jacket with a broad collar, matching gold bell-bottoms and chunky black platform shoes.

When Monterey steps onto the dance floor, there’s very little chance of him going unnoticed.

Personality

Monterey is confident, energetic and competitive, with a natural performer’s instinct for making an entrance. His dancing is sharp and rhythmic, filled with spins, kicks and perfectly timed finger-clicks.

But Monterey isn’t all sequins and swagger. When the Cheese Family discovers the truth behind its long-running feud with Velvet Blue and the Stilton Sisters, he listens, thinks and begins to understand the hurt behind the rivalry.

When the family needs to move forward, Monterey is ready to do exactly that. In The Stilton Divide, after hearing the truth about the past, he gives the family the simple instruction that sets their next adventure in motion:

“Then we follow the crumbs.”

Family and friendships

Eddie Emmental and Clarabelle Cheddar are Monterey’s parents. Sir Blue Vein and Lady Brie are his grandparents. Halloumi Belle is his sister and dance partner, and together they are known as the Disco Twins.

Mini Mozzarella and Babybel are his younger siblings, while Wensley is the family’s much-loved Wensleydoodle.

Monterey and Halloumi have an especially close partnership. On stage they move almost instinctively together, matching spins, glides and steps before finishing their Nationals routine back-to-back beneath the lights.

Stories featuring Monterey Jack Flash

In Chutney and Champions, Monterey and Halloumi represent the Cheese Family at the Nationals. Despite sabotage and the return of their old rivals, the Stilton Sisters, the Disco Twins produce a dazzling final routine and win the competition.

In The Stilton Divide, Monterey joins the wider family as they uncover the truth about Velvet Blue and the origins of the feud that has divided the two branches of the family.

Fun fact

Monterey’s finger-clicking is so sharp that even the glitter seems to know when to appear.

Image description

A landscape illustration of Monterey Jack Flash dancing in a grand ballroom. Monterey is a tall, slim golden-yellow wedge of cheese with round holes, a huge cheerful grin and thick golden-blond hair swept dramatically backwards. He wears oversized dark aviator sunglasses with gold frames, a glittering gold jacket with a broad seventies-style collar, matching gold bell-bottom trousers, a gold belt and chunky black platform shoes.

He is caught in an energetic dance pose on a polished wooden floor, with one hand raised ready for his characteristic finger-click and his other arm stretched outwards. Behind him, an audience of anthropomorphic cheese characters cheers beneath deep-purple curtains, strings of warm lights and a large mirror ball casting golden rays across the ballroom.
